Growing up, actor Ian Veneracion never imagined that he would follow in the footsteps of his father, abstract artist Roy Veneracion. “My father helped me become an artist but never really forced me to become one,” relates Ian.
Ian’s fondest memories with his father were their painting sessions together. Those were the early beginnings of his love affair with colors. “Kahit noong maliit pa ako. I would see him paint and I would go to him. Para hindi ko siya kulitin bibigyan niya ako ng papel or bibigyan niya ako ng blank canvas. Pagkatapos niyang gamitin ‘yung isang pintura, iaabotniya sa akin, ‘Here, you might want to use this’,” recalls Ian.
Since those painting sessions, Ian has come a long way as an artist. He mounted his third solo exhibit in 2014 wherein he spent almost six months in isolation to finish his 55-piece collection.
While he admires the works of other artists like Gus Albor, Bencab, Lao Lianben and first National Artist Fernando Amorsolo (whose famous artwork of the St. Michael is now being used as the label of Ginebra San Miguel), Ian still considers his father as his biggest influence. He has his father to thank for the gift of art.

Now that he is a father himself, Ian takes after his old man in raising his own kids. “My kids were brought up the way I was brought up. They pass through me. But at the end of the day, they can be whoever they want to be. He always says, ‘You want to be a doctor, an actor or a drummer? Be the best doctor, be the best actor, or be the best drummer in the world.’ My father taught me to be the best version of myself,” he ends.
